In 1999, they broke through with a 97-win season and reached the NLCS, falling to the Atlanta Braves in a dramatic six-game series. The team was led by stars like Mike Piazza, a dominant offensive catcher, and Al Leiter, their pitching ace. In 2000, the Mets won the NL pennant and advanced to the World Series, where they lost to their crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees, in the "Subway Series."
