1997 St. Louis Cardinals Team Signed Baseball. The 1997 St. Louis Cardinals finished the season with a disappointing 73-89 record, placing fourth in the National League Central Division. Managed by Tony La Russa, the team struggled offensively and dealt with injuries and inconsistency throughout the year. Key players included slugger Mark McGwire, acquired midseason from the Oakland Athletics, who hit 24 home runs in just 51 games with the Cardinals. Pitching was a weak spot, with the staff posting a below-average ERA and lacking a true ace after Andy Benes underperformed.
