Description
Michael Phelps Signed Swimming Cap Display. For a brief moment, it appeared that Phelps would only match Mark Spitz' historic seven-Gold Medal performance at the 1972 Munich Games. Aaron Peirsol captured the lead for the United States with a strong backstroke in the 400-meter medley relay, but Brendan Hansen would surrender it in the breaststroke leg, supplying Phelps with the third place position behind Australia and Japan when his butterfly leg began. But by the time Phelps hit the wall 100 meters later, he had turned the tables, staking the US freestyle anchor Jason Lezak to almost a full second headstart over the Australian former world record holder Eamon Sullivan. "I was thinking not to blow the lead," Lezak would tell reporters afterward. "I was really nervous." Sullivan appeared to gain on Lezak in the home stretch, but it was Lezak who would touch the wall first, cementing Phelps' unprecedented eighth Gold Medal and seventh World Record in Beijing.Offered is a 18x21" display that features a silver-Sharpie signed black Speedo cap. The signature displays well. Minor wear exhibited on the frame. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
