Description

1952 Sugar Ray Robinson Coca-Cola Advertising Sign. How appropriate that a man who supplied the American sports fan with many great battles will now inspire yet another, as sports memorabilia and Coca-Cola collectors will soon go head to head for this coveted rarity. Remember, even though Robinson was the greatest fighter of his age, African-American endorsers were still controversial in white America, and this special relic certainly derived from a black neighborhood shop. As such, the print run would have been much smaller than those dedicated to the likes of Mickey Mantle or Ted Williams, and the relative poverty of the black neighborhoods would have further compromised this piece's chances of survival. The 12x15" cardboard sign exhibits handling wear with scattered bends and small tears, but original easel back is still affixed and our catalog imagery should properly attest to its strong aesthetics. We can't find any indication that another example has ever sold at auction.
