Description
1821 Printed Account of Bill Neat vs. Tom Hickman Bout. A crowd of 22,000 gathered on Hungerford Common on December 11, 1821 to witness one of the great fight events of the era as Bill "The Bristol Bull" Neat met Tom Hickman, known to The Fancy as the Gaslight Man. Presented is a round-by-round account of the seventeen-round battle, beginning with a description of an early 19th century version of "smack talk," and ending thusly:17. Hickman was with difficulty brought to the scratch, and he only stood up to receive a heavy body blow, which doubled him and he fell and faintly said "Enough."
A marvelous woodcut image stands above the title line of the 8.5x10.75" page, which exhibits edge chipping and some tearing along the right edge, but is effectively bolstered along the left side by vintage tape. The overall visual effect remains very strong, and the age and light paper stock of the piece is such that its very existence is an unlikely blessing. One of the earliest known examples of its type.
