Description

1924 Christy Mathewson Signed Check. In the rough and tumble Dead Ball Era of our national pastime, when the sport was populated by brawling drunks and illiterate farmhands, Matty was recognized almost as much for his gentlemanly comportment as he was for his remarkable Hall of Fame abilities. The 373-game winning right-hander filled out and signed this personal check less than a year before his early death as the delayed result of a World War I gas attack, scripting all words, figures and his closing signature in bold 9+/10 black fountain pen ink. Some light fold lines are only visible upon the closest of inspection, and the check otherwise presents wonderfully with light edge and corner wear. "Big Six" signatures are becoming increasingly tough, and forgeries abound. Smart investors are aggressively chasing the few available examples of his personal checks as they appear, and we expect the flow will continue to wane in coming years, and that the value will continue to rise. The check has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA for protection and unquestioned authenticity.
