Description
1920 Charles "Chick" Evans US Open Amateur Championship Gold Medal. Four years earlier, Evans had become the first golfer in history to win both the US Amateur and US Open in the same year, and this victory at the 1920 edition of the former would prove to be the last of his three Majors. Evans' 298 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio at the close of play was one stroke better than that of an eighteen-year old Bobby Jones, competing in his very first US Amateur. Likewise competing for the first time at age eighteen this year was Gene Sarazen, who would tie for thirtieth at thirteen strokes off Evans' winning pace. Tommy Armour and Johnny Farrell likewise made their tournament debuts in 1920.Presented is the gleaming symbol of Evans' victory in one of the most historically significant tournaments of early twentieth century golf. The Great Seal of the United States appears at center of obverse, ringed by raised lettering that announces, "United States Golf Association, 1920." Reverse finds artfully engraved, "Champion Amateur Golfer, Charles Evans" at center of laurel wreath imagery. Loop at top of medal has been removed with no harm to aesthetics. Diameter 1.75". Ten karat gold. Fine condition.
Evans' ability to compete for this medal was born from a noble philanthropy, as he had earned a considerable amount of money in the aftermath of his 1916 victories which would have negated his amateur status had he kept it. Instead he formed a scholarship program for caddies with the funds, stating, "My mother wouldn't think of accepting my money unless we could arrange it to be trusted to furnish educations for deserving qualified caddies. She pointed out that the money came from golf and thus should go back into golf." Since that time, over 9,800 caddies have received college educations as Evans Scholars. It remains the largest scholarship organization in sports, and the largest privately funded scholarship program in the United States.
In Evans' characteristically generous style, the medal was gifted to the great-grandfather of our consignor, an old golfing buddy, and includes a letter of provenance. Letter of provenance from consignor.
