Description

1961 Wilbur Clark Tournament of Champions Gold Medal Won by Sam Snead. Clark was the owner of the famous Desert Inn and several other Vegas properties, funded largely with support from underworld figures from Bugsy Siegel to Meyer Lansky. His love of golf inspired the creation of the "Tournament of Champions" on his Desert Inn course, open only to golfers who had claimed a PGA Tour victory in the previous year. This first great golf course to spring from the harsh desert landscape of Las Vegas proved to be a major draw for both professional golfers and Hollywood celebrities for decades to come. But this year it was Snead who stamped his own name into the record books, claiming the victory and the presented gold medal.

This Vegas rarity features the logo of the PGA at obverse and engraved with the details of the win: "Tournament of Champions, 1961 Scores 68-67-69-69-273." Verso is stamped "14K" and engraved, "Winner, Tourn. Champions, Sam Snead." Measures one and a half inches in diameter. Fine condition. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
