Description
1961 Canada Cup Medalist Trophy Won by Sam Snead. "At 49, Snead is playing such a beautiful brand of golf that he seems almost godlike on the golf course," read the coverage of the ninth annual Canada Cup Matches in the June 12, 1961 edition of Sports Illustrated magazine. Snead's astounding sixteen under-par 272 left a gaping eight-stroke margin between himself and the runner-up, and earned Snead, who admitted "I guess I'm playing as well as I ever have," the presented trophy as a memento for posting the lowest individual score in the tournament.The Canada Cup has been contested under a few different names during its existence, occasionally simultaneously, so one shouldn't be confused that the stout little prize is engraved, "The International Golf Championship Trophy." A secondary engraving affixed to the black wooden base provides better context, reading "1961 International Golf Championship, Puerto Rico," the rather surprising yet easily verifiable setting for the 1961 Canada Cup. Also engraved on the body of the trophy is the following: "Presented by John Jay Hopkins for International Championship Competition."
As this auction likewise presents a gilt silver 1961 Canada Cup trophy that bears Snead's engraved name which was issued as the team prize, which Snead won with partner Jimmy Demaret over the second place Aussie team of Kel Nagle and Peter Thomson. Height of this silver personal model is nine inches. Minimal handling wear with no notable condition distractions. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
