Description

1942 Ryder Cup Team Golf Bag Issued to Sam Snead. The hostilities that would swell into the Second World War, and the reconstruction that followed the armistice, suspended the playing of this friendly international competition between the years of 1937 and 1947, though the PGA of America continued to name teams during this period, with the players participating in domestic exhibitions. Presented is what may be the only surviving golf bag issued to members of the 1942 American squad, an exceedingly rare brown leather relic affixed with a patriotic metal plate announcing, "U.S.A. Ryder Cup Team, P.G.A. 1942, Sam Snead." A golden embossed "MacGregor" manufacturer's mark appears beneath the handle. The bag exhibits solid game wear but has survived the passage of seven decades quite well, with a broken zipper the only issue of note beyond general wear and soiling. A "World Golf Hall of Fame" tag dangling from the strap hook clearly dates to decades later, applied when the bag was on display there. A splendid relic from the year of Snead's first Major win (PGA Championship). Height thirty-six inches. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
