Description

1977 Presidential Medal of Freedom Awarded to Joe DiMaggio from The Joe DiMaggio Collection. Joe DiMaggio's achievements on the baseball field are legendary and well documented, but his contributions off the field are equally remarkable, and in many ways, even more broadly consequential. Among his many endeavors, he voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II at the peak of his Major League career. DiMaggio also traveled abroad to places like Vietnam and Korea during wartime, promoting goodwill and spreading the love of baseball. His philanthropic efforts included the founding of the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, and throughout his life, he remained a positive influence for Americans during challenging times. His work ethic and commitment on the field were admired, but his integrity and professionalism off the field earned him the notice of the United States government.

On January 10, 1977, President Gerald Ford honored DiMaggio with the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction, the highest civilian award in the United States. The medal remains preserved in its original mahogany display case, which features a nameplate reading "Joseph DiMaggio" above the U.S. Presidential seal. Inside, the enameled medal is engraved on the reverse with the inscription, "Presidential Medal of Freedom Joseph Paul DiMaggio 1.10.77 D-56." The case also contains a broad ribbon and three smaller related components, including a miniature medal with gold detailing. Additionally, the original citation signed by President Ford, presented in its leather folio, is included.

This prestigious award stands out among the many accolades DiMaggio received over his lifetime, symbolizing his lasting impact on American culture and his enduring legacy as a national hero. It comes with several original related documents. The historic piece entered the collecting hobby as part of The Joe DiMaggio Collection that sold at auction in May 2006. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
