Description

1875 Zappas Olympics Silver "A" Winner's Medal. The 1875 Zappas Olympics Silver 'A' Winner's Medal was presented during the third edition of the Zappas Olympic Games, held in Athens from May 11 to 18, 1875. These events were part of a modern revival of the ancient Olympic Games, led by Evangelis Zappas, decades before the establishment of the International Olympic Committee. The medal was struck in silver at the Paris Mint, designed by Albert Désiré Barre, and measures 37 mm in diameter and 41 grams. The obverse displays a detailed portrait of King George I of Greece, encircled by the Greek inscription identifying him as the King of the Hellenes. The reverse features a laurel wreath bearing the text "Olympia, at Athens, 1875, Class A," with the outer legend honoring Evangelis Zappas as the organizer. Awarded to first-place finishers, this Class A medal is historically significant and exceptionally scarce. Moderate handling/storage wear.
