Description
1914 "Miracle" Boston Braves World Championship Leather. Exceptionally rare in any condition, and particularly in the remarkable EX state in which this specimen finds itself today, this incredible fringed leather pillow top celebrates the team responsible for one of the most improbable comebacks in the game's long history. Ten games below .500 at the midpoint of the season, the Braves stormed back in the second half to win sixty-one of the final seventy-seven to take the pennant by a landslide. A four-game sweep of the all but invincible Philadelphia Athletics in October accounts for the bold "World Champions" text that, along with "Boston Braves" above, frames the incredible photographic image imprinted on the body of the piece. Identifiable in the front row are Hall of Famers Johnny Evers and Rabbit Maranville. Factory cut tassels and a stitched leather band, used to secure the piece to a pillow, ring the perimeter of this exceptional piece. Both of these features are original and unrestored, with no additional stitching as is often seen. A degree of surface wear is to be expected given the intent of the artifact as a pillow cover, though our catalog imagery should indicate that the overall aesthetics remain strong. Total dimensions are 23x24".Auction Info
