Description

1930 Al Simmons Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 6--World Championship and First of Two Consecutive Batting Titles! While the outrageous slugging tandem of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig powered the mighty Yankees to three consecutive American League pennants between 1926 and 1928, this man and Jimmie Foxx wrenched control of that flag from the Big Apple and planted it firmly in the City of Brotherly Love, where it flew for another three uninterrupted years between 1929 and 1931. Simmons would capture the Junior Circuit batting title in the last two seasons of that span and win the World Championship in the first two, leaving 1930 the intersection where those two important achievements overlap.

This signature model Hillerich & Bradsby exhibits outstanding game use from a year that Simmons batted a league-topping .381 en route to a Fall Classic victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. His 152 runs scored likewise led all American Leaguers. The barrel is coated in ball marks and cleat divots, with a scattering of nails tacking down grain swollen by countless impacts. Handle remains miraculously uncracked considering the volume of game use, and a small chip in the knob is likewise noted in a condition report. Left barrel has been planed to accept factory sidewriting which is only partially legible but does suggest that Simmons was not the player who shipped the bat to Louisville for reproduction. We must also point out an unusual pattern of small holes drilled into the knob which may or may not relate to Simmons.

But the experts at PSA/DNA assure us that Simmons was the original owner and user of this bat, one that dates to perhaps the most important season of his career. It's an exciting rarity from one of the most underrated players enshrined at Cooperstown, lumber commonly absent from even the most comprehensive of Hall of Fame bat collections. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 6.
