Description
Circa 1902 Ed Delahanty & Brothers Cabinet Photographs Lot of 3. Best here, of course, is the photograph of tragic Hall of Famer Ed Delahanty in the uniform of the Washington Senators, the team he represented for the final 165 games of his career before he was swept to his death over Niagara Falls. The uniform style he wears dates the image to 1902, the season of his second and final batting title (.376). Though the mount appears to have been trimmed of any identifiers, we strongly believe the photo to be the work of renowned turn-of-the-century baseball photographer Carl Horner, whose imagery populates many of the period's baseball card issues. This image appears within the E107 Breisch-Williams issue. Dimensions 4x6", EX-MT.His brother Jimmy's photo is here as well in the uniform of the 1903-04 Boston Beaneaters, likewise almost certainly Horner's work, and the image utilized in the E96 Philadelphia Caramel set. Dimensions 4x5.5", VG. Finally, brother Tom appears in civilian clothing on a chipped mount bearing the partial stamp of an unknown photographer. Approximate size 6x7", Good.
The Ed Delahanty Collection
The following five lots derive from the family of Hall of Fame outfielder "Big Ed" Delahanty, one of the most feared sluggers of the turn-of-the-century game. Three times Delahanty finished a Major League season north of the fabled .400 mark, and his .346 career average places him fifth on the all-time leaderboard. He remains the only man in history to hit four inside-the-park home runs in a single contest. But despite the remarkable talent that earned him a 1945 posthumous induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Ed Delahanty's legacy remains the shocking manner of his sudden passing. Ejected from a railroad train just north of the Canada/US border on July 2, 1903 for drunk and disorderly conduct, Delahanty attempted to cross a railroad bridge over the Niagara River on foot only to fall to his death, swept over the famous Falls. The remarkable archive offered within this Signature auction is comprised largely of documents relating to the court case following the tragedy, as well as a selection of mementos from happier times when he was hailed as one of the greatest figures in baseball.
