Description
1956-57 Don Drysdale Rookie-Era Game Worn Brooklyn Dodgers Cap, MEARS Authentic. Those wholesome "happy days" of the 1950's weren't all "Leave it to Beaver" and "Father Knows Best," despite what late night classic television re-runs might have you believe. John Wayne ruled the silver screen with murderous detachment, and Rocky Marciano turned every Heavyweight title defense into a bloody battle of attrition. In Major League Baseball, it was a six-foot five right hander out in Los Angeles who served as the standard bearer for no-nonsense masculinity, a lawman who doled out justice with searing horsehide. "If they knocked two of your guys down, I'd get four," he explained. You have to protect your hitters."Though he'd earn his Cooperstown immortality on the other side of the continent, Drysdale got his Big League start in Brooklyn, and game worn material from those fifty-nine appearances are highly prized for their rarity and significance. This battle-scarred beauty was sported by the flame-throwing right hander while recording some portion of the first 203 of his 2,486 career strikeouts before the logo "B" was replaced with "LA" on team uniforms in 1958. Visor is cracked and torn but still bears a bold, vintage number "53" under the visor, while an unknown hand has written "1957 Don Drysdale" at interior leather headband.
The band and wool material to which it is attached is torn through the "Tim McAuliffe" label, not far from size "7 1/4 Pro KM Cap" stamping. Some moth damage appears at rear crown. Strong, sweaty wear is evident throughout. When the cap was originally sold nearly a decade ago by Legendary Auctions, it was accompanied by a letter of provenance from a Drysdale family friend, but sadly that letter has been lost. We include a copy of the Legendary Auctions catalog text that makes this claim. LOA from MEARS, Authentic. LOA from Sports Investors Authentication. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
