1822 President James Monroe Signed Check, PSA/DNA NM-MT 8. James Monroe (1758-1831) was the fifth president of the United States, serving from 1817 to 1825. A veteran of the American Revolution, he held key diplomatic and political roles, including Secretary of State and Secretary of War. His presidency is best known for the Monroe Doctrine, which warned European nations against interference in the Americas. Monroe presided over the "Era of Good Feelings," marked by national unity and economic growth. He helped expand U.S. territory with the acquisition of Florida from Spain.
