Description
1987-88 Wayne Gretzky Game Worn & Signed Edmonton Oilers Gloves -- Photo Matched! Massive game wear on this pair of gloves speaks to a long term of service to the Great One during the most celebrated portion of his career as a representative of the mighty Edmonton Oilers. Though an eight-season streak as the NHL points leader would end this year, Gretzky maintained command as the league's assist leader with 109, the ninth of thirteen consecutive seasons atop that statistic.Far more important than personal statistics, however, were Gretzky's contributions to the Oiler's fourth Stanley Cup Championship in five years. He would never again hoist that legendary hardware for the remainder of his twenty professional seasons. Gretzky would famously abandon Edmonton after this last taste of glory for a new era in Los Angeles.
The JOFA model 686L gloves are awash in stick marks and stained by sweat, crafted in Oilers blue, orange and white and adorned with his immortal number "99." No laces are present because, as a letter of provenance from the collector who acquired the gloves in August 1988 reports, Gretzky removed the laces of his gloves prior to use. That letter suggests that the gloves were worn in the Stanley Cup Finals, however the photo matching experts at Sports Investors Authentication have only been able to locate photography sufficiently clear to make a match to the following:
October 11 (right glove): 9-2 victory over Kings (4 goals, 1 assist).
October 31 (right glove): 6-5 loss to Devils (3 assists).
Unknown opponent (right glove).
Unknown date vs. Kings (left glove).
We must also mention that the gloves are not a matched pair--the format of the JOFA logo is slightly different on each, which explains why the gloves are photo matched to different games. Silver sharpie signature at each wrist rates 8/10. Photo match LOA from Sports Investors Authentication. Letter of provenance from collector who acquired gloves in August 1988. 1994 sales invoice. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
