2016 Peyton Manning Second to Last Career Touchdown Reception Football - Photo Matched to AFC Championship Game. Considered by many to be the greatest quarterback ever to wear an NFL uniform, Peyton Manning closed out his peerless career as owner of the bulk of the most significant records for the position. His victory in the fiftieth edition of the Super Bowl was the 200th of his Hall of Fame career, though he would fail to find pay dirt in his glorious farewell. The last two of his record 579 touchdown passes had come two weeks before, in the final showdown with the only man to challenge his gridiron supremacy, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots.

Presented is the football that recorded the first of those two touchdown passes in the AFC Championship game on January 24, 2016, a twenty-one yard first quarter strike to Broncos tight end Owen Daniels that opened the scoring in that dramatic clash of quarterback titans. The letter of provenance from our consignor Chad Nelson tells the story of the ball bounding into the end zone grandstands after Daniels' celebratory spike, ending with a thud against the forehead of his ten-year old son Brinton. In the bedlam of the celebration, Nelson initially thought the ball had come from another nearby fan, but he quickly realized the true derivation when he saw the Broncos logo and array of silver marker notations.

These notations, applied pre-game by the referees and staffers tasked with assuring the integrity of the footballs in a time when such things were making front page news with the "Deflategate" incident, confirm the remarkable tale, as photography of a jubilant Daniels in the end zone finds him holding a ball that perfectly matches. The Broncos would never trail the Patriots that day, establishing this as the last ball thrown by Peyton Manning to take the lead of a game.

Beyond the detailed letter of provenance from our consignor and the Owen Daniels photo match, the lot is accompanied by several photographs of Chad and Brinton Nelson posing with the ball at their seats near the end zone railing, and their seventh row tickets for the Championship contest.

Manning's induction in 2021 to the Pro Football Hall of Fame was a certainty on par with death and taxes, and the presented lot is among the most significant Manning relics that will exist outside the walls of that hallowed ground. With that special composite of elite significance and ironclad authenticity, this is a relic that should bring the most serious modern football collectors to the line of scrimmage. Letter of provenance from original consignor. LOA from Heritage Auctions. LOA from Sports Investors Authentication.
