1934 Paul Runyan PGA Championship Gold Medal. Without a doubt, Paul Runyan, the 5'7", 125 lb. light hitting (barely averaging 230 yards per drive) but accurate driver of the golf ball, was the most feared little man in the game. He was considered to be the best truly light-hitting player who ever lived. He was deadly straight with his driver, fairway woods and irons, and around and on the greens he was an absolute genius. Coming of age during the Depression he learned to be tough and was known for that killer instinct; hence the nickname "Little Poison." Runyan won twenty-nine times on the PGA Tour between 1930 and 1941. He won nine victories in 1933 alone and another six in 1934. In addition to winning the PGA Championships in 1934 and 1938, Runyan was the leading money winner in the U.S. in 1934.The 1934 PGA gold winner's medal is the early large version and is accompanied by an unbelievable handwritten letter by Mr. Runyan describing the match "as I remember it." He details each day of the match. He writes about playing "my old boss" Craig Wood in the finals and describes how "the psychological advantage is mine. Craig could not get down in two from the rough while I two putted and have won against the odds." This letter is an important piece of PGA tournament history.
This gold 1934 Winners medal designed by renowned artist and sculptor Henning Ryden is engraved "Professional Golfer's Association of America 1934" with set diamond on the front and scene on back depicting a idealized man in his follow through and a stylized young caddy carrying a flag. Medal measures 2" in diameter and weighs an impressive ninety-five grams. A true work of art and the most impressive of all the Major Championship Gold Medals. The large Henning Ryden version was only used for about ten years, being replaced in the mid 1930's with a smaller version in a less classical motif. Lot derives from the Philadelphia Private Golf Museum. Letter of provenance from Paul Runyan.
