Description
1872 Ross Barnes CDV SGC Authentic - From the George Wright Collection. Ross Barnes is quite possibly the greatest "unknown" of 19th century baseball. His career was a brief 9 seasons spanning from 1871-1881 and he was an integral part of the success the Boston Red Stockings experienced in the 1870's. In 1872, Ross had a career high .432 batting average. Ross's name is a constant in the top 3 lists of many offensive and defensive categories from 1871 through 1876. A leader in hits (4 times), runs (4 times), doubles (3 times), stolen bases and was even NL batting champ three times. Barnes holds a lifetime batting average of .359. In 1877, he was afflicted by illness and appeared in only 22 games. He never returned to his former self. This cabinet card comes from the personal collection of George Wright, at one time serving as part of a display which imaged 11 members of the Red Stockings team. The cabinet photo of McVey and the original matte are being offered elsewhere in this auction. The image of Barnes in formal attire is free of creasing, wrinkles and surface scratches. Slight toning exposes the oval shape which was the open area visible through the matte. The top right and left corners were purposely clipped to accommodate other cabinet cards for proper placement. Corner clipping aside, the photo shows sharp detail, a wide range of contrast and the "toned" area actually shows off the quality of the image. The card backing displays a roughness on the reverse from said mounting. It is also worth noting the image was taken by the renown Warren Studios of Boston, Mass.Auction Info
