Description

1913 Pastime Novelty Christy Mathewson SGC 60 EX 5. One of the most-scarce post cards to feature Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson is this "Our Matty" Black & White entry from Pastime Novelty. The image is a unique full-figure windup pose and we even have the bonus of knowing exactly where (Shibe Park) and when (October 8, 1913) which place the scene at game 2 of the 1913 World Series with the Giants winning 3-0 in 10 innings. It was the ultimate pitchers' dual as Mathewson and Eddie Plank both pitched 9-inning shut outs! Amazingly enough it was Mathewson who helped his cause with a single that brought in the winning run, then proceeded to nail the a's coffin with another shutout inning in the tenth! The caption accurately describes Mathewson as "the World's Greatest Pitcher" and few would argue. Graded SGC 60 EX 5. One of just ten (total) graded by SGC; One of three in EX with a lone EX+ acting as the finest of the known examples. There are no entries for this card on the PSA census.
