Description

1925-31 W590 Lou Gehrig (Hand-Cut) Rookie SGC VG 3 -- Pop One, None Higher! While Gehrig did enjoy a brief, late-season debut with the 1923 World Championship Yankees, and ten more appearances with the 1924 edition, it was in 1925 that the Iron Horse was fully released from the Bronx paddock, beginning on June first of that season a consecutive games streak bested only once in baseball history. Ripken's improbable ascension to the durability throne has done nothing to diminish Gehrig's remarkable achievement, and collectors are properly drawn to those few relics dating to the first steps of that marathon march.

Presented is the finest known rookie card from the rare and mysterious W590 issue. These cards were issued in strips which were then hand-cut by collectors. The date span of the issue is determined by changing team affiliations of several of its subjects, but a full roster of the set's subjects has never been completed due to the rarity of surviving examples. This is the finest Gehrig in the SGC population, who joins Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb as the key subjects of the set (establishing Gehrig as the most important rookie). Graded SGC VG 3.
