Description
1989-90 Wayne Gretzky Game Worn Los Angeles Kings Jersey. The only player in NHL history to see his jersey retired across the entirety of the League, Wayne Gretzky remains the most celebrated ice hockey figure in the world more than a decade after hanging up his fabled double nines. A special honor was likewise granted by the Hockey Hall of Fame, which waived the standard post-retirement waiting period for the Great One, his immortality long since assured. Perhaps only the legendary Pele of international soccer fame could challenge Gretzky for the level of deification within his respective sport, assuring that any relic graced by his touch will be held in the utmost reverence within the collecting community.Jerseys worn in NHL competition by the sport's greatest star rank at the very top of this list, and the great scarcity of authentic representations have ensured that any offering will be met with great interest. The presented gamer dates to a season that saw hockey's most gifted passer extend his streak to eleven consecutive years (the entirety of his NHL tenure) leading the League in assists, with his 142 points likewise an NHL best.
A scattering of stick marks on the chest and both sleeves, and some nice pilling at the typical Gretzky velcro customization at interior of the jersey, bear witness to game action on the frame of the hockey legend, with the fight strap cut out, typical of Gretzky gamers. The properly constructed team crest appears on the chest (fake jerseys typically get it wrong), and memorabilia expert Rich Ellis likewise confirms the size, cut and stitch pattern of the number "99" at each sleeve and verso are a perfect match to known exemplars. The team captain "C" appears at upper left chest, and "Gretzky" is properly constructed on rear nameplate. The absence of the NHL logo at the hem dates this jersey to the first set of the 1989-90 population, as it was added for the second. Interior collar holds "Maska Ultrafil" label with handwritten "54" size designator, correct for Gretzky. Number "99" patch sewn at interior rear hem. Ellis notes that the yellowing of the rear nameplate is a common trait of Kings gamers from this season, and we encounter that unusual condition issue here.
In short, the jersey meets every criterion for a genuine Gretzky gamer, and surpasses most known exemplars in quality of wear. Ellis' painstakingly thorough letter of examination leaves no stone unturned, assuring collectors rightfully wary of the Gretzky jersey market that this offering is indeed the genuine article. LOA from Rich Ellis/SOTG.
