Letter of provenance from Jordan's long-time best friend/assistant George Koehler

1994 Michael Jordan Game Worn & Signed Birmingham Barons Jersey. If you watched the massively popular documentary, "The Last Dance," you'll recognize the name George Koehler, who began his association with the world's most celebrated hoopster as his limo driver and over time transformed into His Airness' right-hand man and best friend, trailing him from the bright lights of Chicago to the sleepy town of Birmingham, North Carolina. Jordan material with Koehler provenance is widely considered just about as good as it gets, since there is arguably nobody in the world closer to the legendary athlete short of perhaps MJ's wife.

This black mesh jersey is accompanied by such a letter of provenance, attesting that Koehler received the garment from Jordan directly. It's a simple design, with white tackle twill identifiers of "Barons" on chest and number "45" on verso, a style used primarily for batting practice but often pressed into official competition due to its light weight and breathability that made it particularly attractive on hot days. The jersey shows light but definite wear consistent with its intended usage. "Wilson [size] 48 label in collar is correct for Jordan's frame, and the black sharpie signature on verso supplies further assurance of authenticity.

While Jordan's arrival in the minor league circuit precipitated a massive surge in local interest, the athlete himself was anxious to be treated like any other aspirant to the Bigs, and he was as aware as anybody else that he wouldn't dominate the game the way he had in the NBA. "I've never been afraid to fail,'' Jordan told The Associated Press. "That's something you have to deal with in reality. You're not always going to be successful. I think I'm strong enough as a person to accept failure. But I can't accept not trying.''

While Michael Jordan's flirtation with our national pastime proved to be brief, the rarity of game used material from that period has opened a gulf between supply and demand that is arguably just as wide as that of his Bulls gear. Our last offering of a Barons jersey in February 2022 saw the garment change hands at a price north of $200,000. Letter of provenance from George Koehler. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
