Description

1914 Baltimore News Gus Gleichmann SGC 30 Good 2. Today, the 1914 Baltimore News series is about as rare a card promotion as can be. The set would have been all but overlooked by most but has become famous for being the source of one of the greatest cards in the hobby - a pre-rookie card featuring a talented young "Babe" who had just signed with Baltimore straight out of St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys by the name of Ruth. For the type card collector, this is an extremely rare chance to add a card from this set to your collection without spending what some will on their homes. The sets features players from the Baltimore Terrapins (Federal League) and the Baltimore Orioles (International League). Cards have been found printed in Red and Blue. The backs display the 1914 season schedule for the appropriate team. The give-away encourages people to "Read the Baltimore News" plus a closing "This card is given to" portion for the lucky recipient's name to be filled in later. Offered is Gus Gleichmann of the Baltimore Orioles. The card presents close to excellent but very minor reverse surface scuffs and a light horizontal crease. Graded SGC Good 2, this is the only example on record with SGC. Currently, there are just nine cards reviewed by SGC for this entire set, half of those are Ruth.
