1991 Wayne Gretzky All-Star Game Worn Campbell Conference Jersey
with Hockey Hall of Fame Letter.The double-nines will still make the heart skip a beat over a decade after The Great One concluded his storied career. The availability of Gretzky gamers, however, has proven to be inversely proportional to the enormous demand, rarely surfacing on the hobby's auction block. Here we find one of the rarest of them all, the striking sweater worn by hockey's all-time leading scorer at Chicago Stadium on Sunday, January 19, 1991, as captain of the Campbell Conference in the 42nd annual NHL All-Star Game.
A sell-out Windy City audience and the largest global television viewership in the history of the exhibition watched The Great One lead his side to a decisive eleven-to-five victory on this day, with Gretzky contributing one of those eleven goals from a Sandstrom assist midway through the second period. The offered garment exhibits an appropriate degree of wear for the Hall of Fame legend's well-established practice of switching jerseys for each period of the NHL's premier exhibition, and bears the ironclad provenance of a letter from the Hockey Hall of Fame sent to a top hobby figure just weeks after the contest.
The NHL crest and captain's "C" adorn the chest, giving way to "Gretzky 99" on verso. The digits are repeated on each sleeve beneath All-Star Game patches at each shoulder. "Maska Air-Knit" tagging in collar bears handwritten "54" size identification, and velcro patch is hand-sewn at interior rear right tail, a Gretzky trademark.
