Description

Perhaps the finest studio photograph of this Dead Ball Era legend!

1900's Christy Mathewson Cabinet Photograph -- Image Used for 1915 Cracker Jack Card! It's one of the most famous photographs of this iconic Dead Ball Era ace, elevated to worldwide esteem through its utilization in several period trading card issues, notably the 1915 Cracker Jack and both the W600 and M116 sets released by The Sporting News from 1902 to 1911. The image finds Mathewson carefully groomed and dressed in his Sunday best, looking more like a young professor than the greatest pitcher in the Major Leagues.

The sepia-toned shot measures 5.5x4", the cardboard mount extending those dimensions very slightly. We note that the bottom edge appears to be trimmed, likely to remove a damaged area as the cardboard utilized for cabinet photography was very susceptible to chipping.

We should also mention that PSA/DNA typically declines to authenticate mounted photography, but every detail of the image and the mount is consistent with other cabinets of the era. Other than the trimming, and a sliver of paper loss at lower edge, the condition of the ancient relic is simply phenomenal. Unquestionably one of the finest Matty photos to surface on the auction block in recent memory.
