Description

The best Matty autograph we've ever encountered!

Circa 1914 Christy Mathewson Signed Large Studio Photograph. It's been nearly twenty years since we've seen another example of this rare, oversized studio photograph of this Dead Ball Era legend, that specimen inscribed to his brother and dated "Dec. 1914." We suspect that the elite rarity of the image is a function of the high expense of production of such a substantial photo (11x14") in those early years of the twentieth century, and the likelihood that they were made for Mathewson specifically for presentation to his closest friends and family.

The subject example must be the finest of any surviving representations due to the absolutely stunning 10/10 unpersonalized black fountain pen ink autograph applied to its surface, the strongest Mathewson signature we have encountered in any format. A horizontal crease traverses the image, passing through Matty's hair, but the visual distraction is relatively minor and, of course, the autograph is well clear. A small crease and chip at lower left corner is likewise innocuous. The silver gelatin image itself is likewise a masterpiece, the deft balance of light and shadow reminding us of the best of the work of George Burke in the decades to come.
