Description

A legend's collection of legends!

1928 Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker & Eddie Collins Signed Baseball from The Lou Gehrig Collection.

UPDATE: This lot includes a letter of provenance from the consignor.

Five of the greatest figures of pre-war Major League Baseball are linked by this spectacular orb--four by autographs, and the fifth by ownership. The single-season stamping format of this OAL (Barnard) baseball tells us that 1928 was the year that the Iron Horse corralled this iconic quartet, eleven years before they'd meet again at the Grand Opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Certainly a meeting between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Athletics was the derivation of this historic orb, as the aging veteran triumvirate of Cobb, Collins and Speaker were all closing out their storied careers with fellow inaugural class Hall of Famer Connie Mack in 1928. Speaker is a thunderous 8.5/10 on the sweet spot, and Collins rates 7/10 on the northern panel. Cobb is the lightest of the group at 3/10 to the west. Finally, the Babe presents at 7/10 to the south. The ball itself is marvelously preserved, with no significant condition distractions to report.

An extraordinary signed baseball by any standard, this relic's enormous appeal is further enhanced by its original ownership, providing evidence that even the greatest names in the sport can be star-struck by an earlier generation of baseball legends. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Letter of provenance from consignor.
