Description
One of the most thrilling editions of this international affair
1969 Ryder Cup Captain's Jacket Owned and Worn by Sam Snead with Presentational Plaque. "I was terrified," admitted Jack Nicklaus afterward. "I wasn't just putting for me, I was putting for my country." Three days of neck-and-neck battling between Great Britain and its former colony came down to a five-footer which would save the Americans from defeat and create the first tie in forty-two years of Ryder Cup history at sixteen points per side. And with this sister's kiss of a result, the two-foot tall Cup would remain on the western side of the Atlantic. At fifty-seven years of age, Sam Snead was still a formidable talent on the links but certainly past the prime years marked by seven Major Championships-thus he served as captain in an honorary, non-playing role. This edition is considered by golf historians as one of the most contentious in Ryder Cup history, with each side intentionally stepping across recognized lines of decorum in regard to the other to gain an advantage. Nicklaus nobly ended the regrettable display on a high note, conceding a missable two-foot putt to opponent Tony Jacklin on the eighteenth green in one of the most famous gestures of sportsmanship in history.
This special vintage, and, of course, the pantheon stature of its owner, serves to establish the presented red blazer as one of the most desirable garments ever made available to tempt the advanced golf collector. Second only to the unattainable Masters Green Jacket in the sport's hierarchy, this single-breasted red blazer is highlighted by the "Ryder Cup, Captain" crest on the front pocket, bearing flag imagery of the dueling nations and a golden "1969." Underscored by a "Haas, Baltimore" tailor's label at interior right breast pocket is a secondary label reading, "Custom Tailored for Sam Snead."
The garment remains in fine condition with no flaws worthy of note. Also here is a presentational plaque bearing an engraved brass plate that reads, "Presented by The Professional Golfers' Association of America to Sam Snead, In grateful appreciation for his outstanding leadership as Captain of the 1969 American Ryder Cup Team." The plaque measures approximately 10x12" and exhibits mild handling wear. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
