Description

Circa 1916 Honus Wagner Photograph - Portrait Used for D381 Ferguson Bakery Card. From 1897 to 1917, Honus Wagner reigned as one of the kings of the diamond alongside Ty Cobb. While both men receive their fair share of votes as the greatest player in baseball, there is generally no debate that Wagner is certainly, at the least, the best shortstop of his age. Finishing with over 3,400 hits and a .329 batting average, the "Flying Dutchman" was also a terror on the base paths, stealing 722 bases.

The offered black & white photograph is credited to "The Cleveland News" and measures approx. 4-1/4 x 5-7/8." The insightful portrait of Wagner from the later years of his career is marginally affected by the some mild soiling and a two short edge tears and there is no silvering. This same portrait was used to create his 1916 D381 Ferguson Bakery card and is a strong representation of Wagner that will catch the eye of anyone looking for great 1910's-era baseball photography. Wagner's D381 Ferguson Bakery card is available elsewhere in this auction.
