1965 Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) vs. Sonny Liston II On-Site Boston Garden Poster. After the brash Louisville underdog shocked Sonny Liston with his masterful performance on Miami Beach, the boxing world clamored for a rematch, putting this iconic pair on a collision course at Boston Garden. But as the fight approached, concerns that the promoters were connected to organized crime began to grow, ultimately leading to Suffolk County District Attorney Garrett Byrne filing an injunction to block the event. A quick scramble to locate a new venue ensued, and a junior hockey rink in the small Maine town of Lewiston was approved, setting the stage for a bout that would prove to be one of the most controversial in a sport with a long and colorful history of shady dealings.This is the poster created for the bout's original Boston Garden setting, a relic that would command the attention of any educated boxing collector based upon its historical significance alone. It's virtual overkill that it's such a physical beauty, a masterpiece of poster design with its full body photographic portraits and its unusual color palette. Tack holes and a degree of exposure to the elements from its public display must be noted, but our catalog imagery should convey that the aesthetics remain marvelously strong. Printed on midweight card stock to dimensions of 28x22".
