Description

1970 Topps Basketball (2nd Series) Wax Box with 24 Unopened Wax Packs! The roots of American basketball date back to the late 19th century and a chilly gymnasium in Springfield, Massachusetts where James Naismith tacked rules for a new indoor game to the YMCA bulletin board. In the late 1940's, the sports saw a surge in popularity at the college level with George Mikan taking on the role of the game's top name. It would not be long before others would bring the game to the spotlight thanks to the immensely talented Harlem Globetrotters drawing larger and larger crowds who also played against NBA teams. It was also the era that saw greats like Jerry West, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Bob Pettit, and Wilt Chamberlain dominate.

Over the span of twenty years, there were just three trading card issues in 1948, 1957 and 1961 before Topps brought out their "tall boy" concept and issued a 99-card edition in 1969 which would be the first of annual promotions lasting until 1981. These early Topps endeavors were both successful back then and are seeing a resurgence in today's market. Usually a strong market brings out supply but that hasn't happened with these early sets, particularly in the area of unopened packs.

With that we are proud and quite frankly amazed that we are offering not just a single 1970 Topps Basketball unopened wax pack but a full, intact box of 24 unopened packs from the second of two series which would feature card #'s 89 through 176. Each pack also has a "Giant Action Poster" contained within. Contents could include a MINT or Gem MT card featuring Nate Thurmond, Gus Johnson, Norm Van Lier (Rookie-SP), Gail Goodrich, one or more of the nine All-Star cards, Walt Frazier, Dave Bing, Connie Hawkins, Dave Debusschere, Calvin Murphy (Rookie), Billy Cunningham, Jerry West, JoJo White (Rookie), Jerry Sloan (Rookie), Willis Reed, and the highly coveted rookie card of Pete Maravich. Box displays nicely with modest wear exhibited throughout with some creasing on the top and bottom. Premier packs authenticator - Steve Hart - has reviewed and authenticated the packs. The box will come wrapped by Steve Hart-Baseball Card Exchange.
