Description

1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky #18 PSA Mint 9 - Only Two Higher. Wayne Gretzky was still a young man in perfect health when he was bestowed with an honor not offered since Roberto Clemente and Lou Gehrig before him. "The Great One" was sent straight to the Hall of Fame upon retirement without the requisite five year waiting period. Ordinarily, one would have to be, at the very least, dying, to get that kind of treatment. But why delay the inevitable. Numbers four and twenty-one were retired from the Yankees and Pirates wardrobes respectively to honor the fallen ballplayers, Wayne Gretzky's famous double-nines were declared off-limits for the entirety of the National Hockey League in perpetuity! This was a distinction previously afforded only to the great Jackie Robinson in the entirety of the four major professional sports.

Graded PSA Mint 9. Only ninety-one of the over 6,100 (w/qualified) submitted representations appear at this elevation of the PSA population ranks, placing it firmly in the top 1.5%. The offered cardboard commemorative finds the sport's greatest name at the front end of the professional career that garnered such unprecedented honors. Like the man skating his way into superstardom on its face, the card earns its adjective of "Great," dodging the condition issues that plague the full-bleed design, and boasting all of the standard hallmarks of a Mint 9 specimen in the form of clean surfaces, sharp corners, thick gloss and strong centering.
