Description

1966 Rawlings Gold Glove Plaque Presented to Al Kaline Following His Ninth Award from The Al Kaline Collection. Rawlings has always been creative when it comes to marketing its brand and building on the exposure gained from its Gold Glove Award. As such, the design of the award has changed over the years and they have also produced special issues and post career trophies for multiple winners. For example, they presented Brooks Robinson with a complete set of sixteen Gold Gloves upon his retirement in 1977, and certain players have received post-career lifetime achievement trophies from Rawlings.

However, the unique and striking award on offer here differs in that it was presented to Kaline during his playing career, after his ninth Gold Glove selection in 1966. Brown wood plaque features a nautical design with a barometer and thermometer mounted on either end. In between is a gold baseball diamond and glove, accented with red and black enamel, which reads "Rawlings Gold Glove Award." Below that is a gold inscription plate which reads: "Al Kaline OF, Ninth Award, American League All-Star Fielding Team."

The only distraction to the piece is a light scuff to the inscription plate. This is the first such Rawlings award which we have ever handled. Letter of provenance from Mark Kaline.
