1970 East-West Major League Baseball Classic Medal & Case Presented to Al Kaline from The Al Kaline Collection - From An Event Benefiting The Martin Luther King, Jr Memorial Center in Atlanta. One of the most socially important sporting events ever played, the East-West Major League Baseball Classic was born out of the desire of Major League Baseball to memorialize the life and mission of fallen civil rights giant and American icon Dr. Martin Luther King. The exhibition took place on March 28, 1970, with the proceeds going to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Center in Atlanta.Baseball's greatest names past and present, including fifteen Hall of Famers and many stars, came together for the event, including Jackie Robinson, Joe DiMaggio, Satchel Paige, Stan Musial, Roberto Clemente, Tom Seaver, Ernie Banks, Pete Rose, Hank Aaron, Johnny Bench, Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, and Al Kaline. Ron Fairly of the Montreal Expos took home the MVP.
The bronze medal offered here, which was presented to Kaline after the game, depicts a figural image of Dr. King and "Martin Luther King Jr. 1929-1968" on the obverse, with "I Have A Dream" and "Peace, Justice, Brotherhood" on the reverse. Housed in gorgeous case bearing a bronze inscription plate which reads:
"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. East-West Major League Baseball Classic, Los Angeles 1970. Presented to Al Kaline for your participation in the cause of human dignity. SCLC. Dr. Ralph Abernathy, President. Compliments of Coca-Cola U.S.A."
