Description
1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie #253 SGC VG-EX 4. Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle had the physique, matinee idol good looks, and the baseball skills to shine under the bright lights of the Big Apple in the 1950s. Competing for the vaunted New York Yankees, Mantle debuted in 1951 and immediately made his presence felt. As the heir apparent to the soon-to-be retiring Joe DiMaggio in center field, Mantle helped the Yankees win World Series titles in each of his first three seasons and rather quickly filled Joe D's otherwise enormous shoes. Mickey's legend only grew from there. When he finally decided to retire in March of 1969, he had accumulated some eye-popping stats along the way: 536 home runs, 344 doubles and 1,509 runs batted in. Winning the elusive Triple Crown in 1956 to go along with three AL MVP awards simply cemented "The Mick's" eventual induction into Cooperstown (1974).Offered is Mickey's always sought-after 1951 Bowman rookie card. Although not as revered as Mantle's 1952 Topps #311, the '51 Bowman is, in fact, his true rookie card and therefore remains on the wish lists of countless baseball collectors and avid hobbyists. As the card back states ("Mickey is the Yankee rookie of whom so much is expected in 1951"), he more than lived up to the billing and then some. The horizontally designed card front captures an attractive colorized image of Mantle striking a batter's pose in Spring Training. This mid-grade example of card #253 from the historic '51 Bowman set is found in attractive condition with good color and four decent corners, but shows some surface wear as well as poor centering. Graded SGC VG-EX 4. Of the 944 examples found in the SGC Pop Report, this is one of 96 cards graded VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT.
