Description

1919 World Series (Game 8) Ticket Stub, PSA Good 2--Pop Two, None Superior! With the possible exception of the inaugural Fall Classic in 1903, the most sought after and desirable World Series artifacts date to the scandalous October of 1919, when Shoeless Joe and seven Black Sox teammates conspired to take a dive for the money. Here we present a ticket stub used for admission to the deciding Game 8 at Comiskey Park in Chicago, the event that effectively ensured the impending doom of the Eight Men Out.

The White Sox starter for Game 8, Lefty Williams was purportedly visited the night before the contest by an individual who threatened to harm him and his wife if he didn't throw the game early. In the first inning, Williams gave up four straight one-out hits for three runs, strong evidence of the conspiracy at work. In the third inning, Shoeless Joe Jackson hit the only home run of the series, but it did little to prevent the Reds from winning the game (10-5) and the World Championship (5-3).

For those collectors who might be new to the hobby and wondering why the number on the ticket is "4" and not "8," we can report that for the first couple decades of Fall Classic action, tickets were numbered by home games, not total games--this being the fourth contest in Chicago. Only five Game 8 exemplars currently reside in the PSA population, and this specimen shares supremacy with one other at the top of the PSA population. Unquestionably one of the most desirable tickets that Heritage Auctions has presented to the collecting community. Encapsulated by PSA, Good 2.
