Description

1868 "The American Chronicle of Sports and Pastimes" & "Spirit of the Times" Bound Volumes. "Porter's Spirit of the Times: A Chronicle of the Turf, Agriculture, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage," a weekly newspaper published in New York City, was the first publication in the United States which consistently covered The American Pastime. This beautifully bound, hardcover volume contains twenty-five issues from July 11 to December 26, 1868 (Volume 18, Numbers 21-26 and Volume 19, Numbers 1-19). The hardcover bound volume measures 16x10.75". We have noticed seven pages that have some paper loss from the result of tears or clipping but otherwise the condition is impeccable.

"The American Chronicle of Sports and Pastimes" (edited by Henry Chadwick, the "Father of Baseball," and formerly "The Ball Players Chronicle") was the first ever weekly periodical devoted exclusively to the sport of baseball. This beautifully bound, hardcover volume contains thirty-one issues from January 2 to July 30, 1868 (Volume 2, Numbers 1-31). The hardcover bound volume measures 14.75x10.75". Complete sets are very rare, especially from the year 1868. The Hall of Fame, Yale University and the Detroit Public Library each house complete runs. This exemplar is the only one we are aware of which remains in private hands. Remains in outstanding condition (nearly flawless) considering its 151-year vintage.
