Description

1918 Baseball Pitched by Walter Johnson, Hit by Ty Cobb. In the blink of an eye, and over nine decades ago, the presented humble sphere made the acquaintance of two of the game's greatest legends. The story was faithfully recounted by a young GI on the eve of shipping out for World War I service as a member of the French Army Ambulance Corps. During the course of a doubleheader between the Detroit Tigers and visiting Washington Senators, the young man retrieved this special ball and cherished it over the decades to follow, notating the ball in block lettering and even sending it off to Tigers shortstop Donie Bush for an autograph. Included with the well-worn OAL ball is a stack of papers, copies of letters sent to and received from the Detroit Tigers, the Baseball Hall of Fame and Donie Bush as he sought to research the precise date of the game (August 4, 1918) he had attended and to get the ball autographed in 1965. Finally, a letter of provenance from the fan himself who received this gift of chance during his final day of freedom before the war.
