Description
1957 Tony Kubek Game Worn New York Yankees Jersey from Rookie of the Year Season. A pinch hit appearance on Opening Day of the 1957 season at Fenway Park would be the first step en route to a Rookie of the Year season for the multi-talented Kubek, who split his time between the infield and outfield almost evenly during his magnificent debut campaign. One can only imagine the feeling of making a first appearance while a visitor in baseball's greatest rivalry, and there's a distinct possibility that this road grey flannel is the one Kubek was sporting that twentieth day of April, 1957.One also can count the odds at 50/50 (given that Yankees players were issued two home and two road jerseys per season) that this shirt saw action in Game 3 of the 1957 World Series, a County Stadium contest against the Milwaukee Braves that stands in history as one of the finest ever rookie performances in a Fall Classic game. Kubek went three for five with two homers, becoming just the second rookie to go yard twice in a Series event.
"New York" arches across the chest of the grey flannel garment, but we must report that these letters have been reaffixed following a term in the minors--the secondary stitching path of the farm club lettering is apparent when held to the light, but not upon typical display. The number "34" on verso is original and unaltered. Proper "Spalding [size] 46" labeling appears at lower left exterior tail, while interior holds a washing instructions label sprouting a "Set 1 1957" flap tag. The number/year "57" is handwritten in marker inside collar. Solid wear is evident throughout. A 10/10 black sharpie inscription, "Tony Kubek, 1957 Rookie of the Year, My Game Used Jersey," adorns the front. A special relic from the last great year of New York City baseball before the National League broke a few million hearts. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph). Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autograph).
