Description
1930 Bobby Jones Signed Spectator's Scorecard from U.S. Amateur Tournament--Completion of Historic Grand Slam! The enormous historical importance of the presented scorecard almost slipped by us, as a vintage notation from the original owner on the rear cover improperly hypothesizes a date of "C. 1926." But a quick Internet search for "Merion Cricket Club" in Haverford, Pennsylvania (today more appropriately named the Merion Golf Club) finds that this was the site of the U.S. Amateur in 1930. Bobby Jones had already won the British Amateur, British Open and U.S. Open of 1930 when he entered this tournament, so all eyes were upon him at Merion to see if he could complete the first ever sweep of all four Majors, known to history as the Grand Slam.Of course, Jones did indeed prove victorious, and his opponent for the final thirty-six holes was a golfer named Eugene Homans. Jones led by seven holes after the morning round, and when both Jones and Homans parred the eleventh hole in the afternoon, Jones' lead stood at eight holes with seven to play. The Grand Slam was his.
The presented scorecard was carried and scored by a spectator for the twenty-nine holes of competition between Jones and Homans it required to seal the former's victory, concluding with their matching par fours on the eleventh hole. Wisely, the spectator approached the victorious golfer for his autograph, applied with the spectator's scoring pencil with 9/10 boldness. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only known signature from Jones that can be definitively pegged to the very day of his Grand Slam realization, and as such stands as one of the most desirable Jones autographs in the hobby.
The scorecard exhibits minor handling wear but no damage of note. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
