Description

1916 M101-4 Sporting News Napoleon Lajoie #97 PSA NM-MT 8 - Pop Two, None Higher! For two years, Cracker Jack ruled the baseball card market despite their 1915 effort being, for the most part, a reboot which marked a diminished emphasis of selling cards with candy to kids. That all changed in 1916 when photographer Felix Mendelsohn marketed a roster of 200 different baseball players to firms that sold products that kids and parents would need as opposed to just like. Now clothing stores, department stores, bakeries, food shops, sports publications, even a brewery (for dad), could advertise in this way. It also seems a sponsor could buy the rights to all 200 players or possibly only a portion thereof.

Offered is card #97 featuring Hall of Fame legend Napoleon Lajoie. "Lajoie was one of the most rugged hitters I ever faced. He'd take your leg off with a line drive, turn the third baseman around like a swinging door, and powder the hand of the left fielder." That was said of him not by some journeyman pitcher but by Cy Young. This card is an M101-4 "The Sporting News" brand variant which has been graded PSA NM-MT 8. There are currently only fifteen total examples noted on the PSA pop report with this back treatment. Our offered card being one of only two graded NM-MT with not a single other rated higher!
