Description

Mid-1950's Willie Mays Game Worn San Francisco Giants Batting Helmet with Provenance, MEARS Authentic. Defining baseball in The Bay during the decade of the 1960's, Mays led his club to The Fall Classic in 1962 and copped his second N.L. MVP in 1965 when he blasted fifty-two long balls. His five-tool skill set and enviable combination of immense power and raw speed made him one of the game's most captivating crowd pleasers.

Presented here is his black batting helmet from the mid-1960's with intertwined "SF" and top button in orange paint. Interior brown headband is partially disengaged but completely intact. Crown pad is also present. "American Baseball Cap 6 7/8" sticker in crown. Exhibits heavy wear. Best of all is "Mays" on black/orange Dymo on back, which dates it from 1964-69. But the interlocking "SF" dates it more to the mid-1960's. Remnants surroundings that logo suggest that it was probably replaced at some point by the team at base camp.

In 1964, Mays registered forty-seven homers and 111 RBI, In 1965, he tallied fifty-two homers and 112 RBI and was named the N.L. MVP.

The helmet was originally obtained by Clyde King who was the manager of the Giants in 1969 and part of 1970. King passed in 2010. The letter of provenance on Giants letterhead was handwritten and signed by King's son-in-law in 2013. Letter of provenance from the son-in-law of Clyde King. LOA from MEARS, Authentic. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
