Description
1921 Schapira Bros. Babe Ruth (Portrait, with Arrows) SGC VG 3. The early 20th century was a time of great growth and prosperity in America. With newfound money came the desire to spend it. Both product store placement and packaging became vital to sales. Schapira Bros. Inc. of New York wisely chose to prominently place Babe Ruth portraits and "in action" scenes not on insert cards but as the panel of the candy boxes. We would imagine the boxes of the face of New York's most beloved bambino would be a popular choice. Their promotion made it possible to get an autographed Babe Ruth baseball in exchange for sending 250 of these pictures to Schapira Bros! Who could resist that? The set has seven different depictions of Ruth and for some reason, some boxes like this with his portrait came with and without two small arrows found in the red field above and on the left and right of the baseball/portrait illustration. Our offered card is the "Portrait, with arrows" variant and was very nicely hand cut including just about all of the illustration and surround border. Graded SGC VG 3. There are just under fifty of these confirmed on the SGC census. This is one of four graded VG with three rated higher.Auction Info
