Description

1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie #253 PSA Authentic. Out on the baseball diamond, there were very few things New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle could not do. With the exception of pitching, "The Mick" could do it all. He could run, hit, hit for power and track down line drives in the outfield. When he made his MLB debut in 1951, he was believed to be the heir apparent to the soon-to-be retired perennial All-Star Joe DiMaggio. Though Mickey got sent back down to the minors for 40 games in '51, he did enough on the Major League level to convince the Yankees brass that he was destined to succeed Joe D. When Mantle did decide to retire 18 years later, he had accomplished an incredible resumé of accolades: 12 AL pennants, seven World Series crowns, 20 All-Star Game nods, three AL MVP awards (1956, '57 and '62), and one elusive Triple Crown. He was elected to Cooperstown as a first-ballot inductee in 1974.

Presented is Mantle's 1951 Bowman rookie card, his true rookie card, and one that won't require taking out a second mortgage to acquire. Though Mickey's 1952 Topps card (#311) continues to grab hobby headlines when a high-grade example sells at auction, the Bowman #253 is the "Commerce Comet's" definitive rookie card. Though the offered example shows some evidence of altering/trimming to the left and right borders, it nevertheless remains a prized piece of baseball history. Graded PSA Authentic (Altered).
