Description
Circa 1920 Ty Cobb Signed Bat. Loved by few, feared by most, but respected by all, Tyrus Raymond Cobb was the Machiavellian ideal of the early game, forging his inaugural Cooperstown bronze in the twin fires of natural ability and gritted-teeth determination. Though Cobb's staggering career hits tally of 4,191 was ultimately eclipsed by perhaps the only other player in history to measure up to Cobb's steep standard for resolve, many batting records remain in the Georgia Peach's sole possession to this day, most notably the .366 career batting average that is as safe as any in baseball. But even if there was no man more proficient with a bat in his hands, that distinction sadly never bore fruit for the intrepid collectors of pre-war signed bats. Truthfully, the practice was highly unusual in those days, finding Babe Ruth as the only figure to sign bats with any significant regularity. It's likely that fewer than ten bats bearing the signature of the Georgia Peach survive to present day.
This is a particularly intriguing example thereof, as the center brand of the provided "dash-dot-dash" Hillerich & Bradsby corresponds to a 1916-22 date range, placing the relic squarely into Cobb's playing days. Lacking a name on the barrel, and measuring out at thirty-five inches (35") and thirty-four ounces (34 oz.), the bat cannot be attributed to Cobb's personal arsenal, but it does exhibit strong game use, with vintage nails securing a large crack that has caused a small area to chip away.
Thankfully, the inscription is unaffected by the cracking, and it trumpets, "To Mr. Al Hobbs with Regards, Ty Cobb" in 8/10 black fountain pen ink. A century after its encounter with the long-reigning Hit King, this special relic stands ready to serve as the centerpiece of a high-end baseball autograph collection. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
