The reigning back-to-back-to-back NBA MVP heads west!

1968-71 Wilt Chamberlain Signed Los Angeles Lakers Player's Contract. While this towering legend of Dr. Naismith's game was instantly famous upon his 1959 arrival to the National Basketball Association, claiming both the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player Award that debut season, Wilt Chamberlain was unquestionably at the peak of his powers and notoriety when he sat in front of the offered document, pen in hand. The Stilt had recently completed his third consecutive season as the NBA MVP for the Philadelphia 76ers, leading the league in scoring during each of those campaigns while playing virtually every minute of every game--endurance that would be stunning for a little point guard, much less a seven-footer.

But any collector interested enough in Chamberlain to pursue ownership of this important relic will know that the Hall of Fame center was one of the most gifted athletes to grace the professional hardwood, with 4.4 speed in the forty, a 44-inch vertical leap and a 500-pound bench press. Extraordinary height was just a small part of the recipe for Wilt's utter dominance.

The opening page of this eight-page covenant is dated "this 26th day of September, 1968," less than a month before Chamberlain played his first game for the Lakers in the dramatic location of The Spectrum in his old Philadelphia hometown. His salary is listed as "$200,000 per year plus other considerations," and while we don't know exactly what those other considerations were, most reporting lands upon a $250,000 annual salary, a record sum.

The balance of the contract is just standard boilerplate but for page six, where "Wilton N. Chamberlain" signs in 9/10 blue ballpoint along with Lakers general manager Fred Schaus and a witness. Condition is marvelous, with only original storage folds to report. Included is the original storage envelope, demonstrating typical handling wear. Property from the Estate of Elaine Hutton, widow of Seymour Goldberg, agent and advisor to Wilt Chamberlain. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
