Description

The year the Mick nearly hit one out of Yankee Stadium!

1963 Mickey Mantle Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9. Still the most feared slugger in the American League after his 1961 M&M Boys heroics and his third American League MVP Award in 1962, Mickey Mantle charged out the gate in 1963, elevating his OPS to 1.088 before breaking his foot on June 5th as he tried to track down a Brooks Robinson home run. His most dramatic moment prior to the two-months of rehabilitation for that injury came in the form of a eleventh-inning walk-off home run against the visiting Kansas City Athletics that came just inches from becoming the first and only fair ball to leave Yankee Stadium. The Mick would famously call this game-winning blast, "the hardest ball I ever hit."

Could this be the bat that did it? The signature model Hillerich & Bradsby F108 is the right vintage, and exhibits fine game use on three sides of the barrel, consistent with Mantle's switch-hitting style. Cleat marks and rack streaks add further appeal, as does a moderate coating of pine tar at middle of the cracked and professionally repaired handle. The PSA/DNA letter notes that this pine tar application is consistent with period photography of Mantle at the plate.

Number "7" is written in vintage marker at knob and barrel end, and a second notation on the barrel end appears to be a number "8," but the experts do not believe this notation relates to another player as Yogi Berra's bat specs were quite different.

Length is thirty-five inches (35"), weight thirty ounces (30.2 oz.). LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9.
